October 2015 President's Message

Ladies,

It’s been a tough few months. Read more to learn about what we're facing as Alaskans currently.

As if the recent blows to our economy weren’t enough, we failed to maintain a majority presence in Anchorage’s municipal government.

Recent headlines tell a difficult story:

Shell calls off its multibillion-dollar mission in Alaska's Arctic”
Alaska economist says ConocoPhillips layoffs have broad reach
Usibelli to halt coal exports for rest of year
Statewide Local Elections - Big Picture - It was a bad night for Republican candidates and conservatives and a good night for Democrats and unions
"Interior Department cancels lease sales in Alaska's Arctic waters, citing low interest"

It is true that Alaska’s economic prosperity has been severely impacted by the unparalleled expansion of regulatory control by the Obama Administration. And not just in extraction industries…no matter where you turn, you hear senior executives and small business owners alike tell of their struggles to expand or maintain market share due to the restrictions placed on them by new requirements ranging from the EPA to ObamaCare.

Veterans will tell us that their access to quality health care is at an all-time low. It has been a year for worry as we struggle with our budget shortfalls and new regulatory complexities. As Alaskans, those who have lived here for decades will tell you that they have become used to a cyclical state economy and now we find ourselves on the down side of this cycle. A cycle that, if not brought about outright by liberal policies, is certainly exacerbated by them. No matter what comes our way, we must recommit ourselves to work to elect those strong Republican candidates who don’t just stand for liberty and prosperity but who will actively defend our conservative values of small government, lower taxes, personal freedoms and American sovereignty against the relentless onslaught of “feel good” liberalism.

Your board of Directors has been busy identifying opportunities to get involved to help raise funds to elect those Republicans! Whether you’re a long time member or just joining the MSRWC, know that we work hard to accomplish our mission of engaging, educating and empowering Republican Women to get involved in the political process. We are well on our way to our goal of raising $20,000 for Republican candidates for the 2016 election cycle. We must foster a spirit of cooperation with our sister clubs statewide to ensure that Republican women make their voices heard. Our challenge is to ensure that our members have significant influence over who will lead our state into the future. YOU can be a part of that, and YOU can continue our proud history of making a difference!

Take time to volunteer on a campaign, or host a fundraiser, or help organize a voter registration drive, or perhaps you’ve been thinking of writing that letter to the editor expressing your thoughts on issues important to us – whatever your choice the time IS NOW.

Whether it’s by voting, fundraising, or volunteering – each task and event you participate in makes a huge difference.

And as an important aside, we ask that you send your thoughts and prayers to those affected by this evening's tragedy at the annual Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Anchorage. It's a reminder of the challenges that many Alaskans, especially our youth, endure.
